Some time ago, I posted that Lifetime was remaking Steel Magnolias with an all black cast. I was both excited and a little concerned because I fell in love with the movie all those years ago and it has held its place as an all time favorite for me. The original had a genuine “colorful” realness to it. The star-studded cast lived up to their credits as they portrayed these very different southern women dealing with serious issues. Every time I watch it, I have the urge to teleport in to the screen and live where they are.
The remake is another opportunity to vicariously visit this beloved film but in a different way. I’m excited to see black women put their cultural spin and transform these women into their black alter egos. (They shouldn’t be clones but just as dynamic).
When I read the list of cast including Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Alfre Woodard, Adepero Oduye, Condola Rashad and Queen Latifah I was pleased. I haven’t seen Adepero Oduye or Condola Rashad’s work but I hear great things.
I would be lying if I didn’t say that I’m a little curious about Queen Latifah playing the part of M’Lynn (she is also the Executive Producer), originally played by Sally Fields. Sally is one of the best of our time and she made M’Lynn so real that I’m having a hard time seeing Queen Latifah, in that role. I’ve seen a lot of Queen Latifah’s work and I believe she is an excellent actress but her challenge is going to be making M’Lynn her own, without changing her too much.
Well, she is the queen, so I’m sure she is up to the challenge. Lifetime has not publicized a release date so we will have to wait and see.
